Reverend Lewis was the pastor of Salem Church, and father of Mercy Lewis, a possessed girl who was a pivotal element in the Salem Witch Trials.
He was a minor recurring character primarily portrayed by actor Thomas Francis Murphy.
Early Life[]
Little is known about the life of Rev. Lewis, the Shepherd of the Salem town. According to his daughter Mercy, he visited his daughter at night to have intercourses with her, thus making him an incestuous pedophile.
Personality[]
Reverend Lewis was a fervent Puritan, shepherd of souls in Salem, Massachusetts. Despite his prestigious position, he was forced to step aside when Cotton Mather, and later his father Increase Mather, came to Salem to conduct a fierce witch hunt. Reverend Lewis showed he was fond of his daughter when he tried to exorcise her, even though it was illegal to practice such ritual according to Puritan legislation.

A man in his fifties, stout, flabby face, thick reddish hair, and a full beard of the same color. Dressed according to the Puritan customs.

- Nameless: Rev. Lewis is one of the few characters that has not yet been referred by his first name.
- Lewis: Derived from the given name Lewis, Medieval English form of Louis. A famous bearer was Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), the author of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland'. This was also the surname of C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), the author of the 'Chronicles of Narnia'.
Status and Rank[]
- Reverend, member of the Protestant clergy. In some situations, the title "reverend" is used synonymously with "pastor" (as a priest of a church), but more properly denotes the ministerial office. In the case of Reverend Lewis, he seems to be more a pastor of the Church then a religious minister.
Trivia[]
- In The Vow, a woman and a little girl are shown out of Mercy's room, but are neither named nor shown in later episodes. They could be his wife and daughter, or neighbors, assisting the Reverend during Mercy's illness.
- The character was portrayed by J.D. Evermore in The Vow, then replaced by Thomas Francis Murphy from the second episode onwards.
